Louis XVI-Style Gilt Bronze Mounted Alabastro Fiorito Table François Linke 19th Century François Linke is widely regarded as the most important Parisian ébéniste of his time, celebrated for his exceptional craftsmanship and inventive interpretations of historic French styles. This magnificent Louis XVI-style center table highlights his mastery, combining richly figured Alabastro Fiorito, one of the rarest and most prized of ancient Roman stones, with mahogany and lavishly engraved ormolu mounts. The palatial table's refined decoration continues throughout, from the central drawer adorned with delicate floral garlands to the matching Alabastro Fiorito panels on its front and reverse. The exceptional stone top displays the warm, richly varied coloration and natural figuring for which Alabastro Fiorito is so coveted. Finished in the round, it rests on four fluted legs accented by distinctive gilt bronze "asparagus" mounts. Born in Bohemia in 1855, François Linke trained as an ébéniste before making his way to Paris in 1875. He established his own workshop in 1881 and later opened a celebrated showroom at 26, Place Vendôme. Linke quickly distinguished himself from the many furniture makers working in Paris, developing a highly individual style that brought new energy and inventiveness to the grand traditions of French furniture. His breakthrough came at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, where he was awarded a Gold Medal. The honor confirmed Linke's place among France's leading ébénistes and brought his work international attention, allowing him to pursue clients and markets around the world. Linke continues to be celebrated as one of the most important furniture makers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with his ambitious designs and exceptional craftsmanship making his work highly coveted by collectors.
