Pinch Pot Carving Workshop with Rachel Shaw
Date: Saturday 10th October Time: 12:00 – 4:00pm Location: JTA - 29 Production Ave, Kogarah NSW Get ready to slow down and explore the art of wood carving in this beginner-friendly workshop with South Coast woodcarver Rachel Shaw of Waiting for Spring. Inspired by the simple forms of ceramic pinch pots, you’ll carve a collection of small wooden pots using a range of traditional hand tools. Their small size gives you the chance to make a couple and experiment along the way – perhaps making one smooth and softly rounded and another more textured, leaving the marks of the carving tools visible. You’ll learn how to hollow the inside, shape the outside and refine your form, while exploring how different timbers feel to carve and how their grain and colour can influence the finished piece. Rachel’s relaxed and approachable teaching style is all about slowing down, learning to work with your hands and enjoying the process. Your pots don’t need to be perfectly round or matching – each can take on a character of its own. No experience is needed. By the end of the workshop, you’ll head home with your own little collection of hand-carved pinch pots and plenty of new carving skills. Includes: A selection of timber for you to carve Use of all carving tools for the duration of the workshop Organic food-safe wood finish What to wear: Closed-in shoes Clothes you don’t mind getting dusty Full-length pants preferred For more on Rachel Shaw and her work, visit Waiting for Spring
