Lecturer: Lucy Turnbull Sat 24 Oct – Sat 7 Nov (3 full Saturdays) 9.30am – 4.30pm Level: Intermediate to Advanced Age – 16+ This is an adult class and is not suitable for students under 16 years of age. Students under 18, must obtain parental or guardian consent and submit a completed consent form before the class commences. ‘The Painted Figure’ invites participants to look beyond the way in which a figure or object appears and consider the vast pictorial possibilities of the painted image. Through direct observation of still life arrangements and the clothed figure, participants develop confidence in using limited palettes, mixing colour, and strategies to construct paintings. Lucy facilitates open discussions, introducing modern and contemporary artists to illustrate how colour, tone, shape, and composition can be used to build form and organise pictorial space. This painting class provides a structured, supportive studio environment suitable for painters of all skill levels and experience. Materials required: Oil Paints (optional colours – use what you have) Titanium White Zinc White Lemon Yellow Cadmium Yellow Medium Cadmium Red Light Alizarin Crimson Ultramarine Blue Viridian Raw Umber Ivory Black Peach Black (Payne’s Grey) Primed Supports 6-8 smaller surfaces (postcard size up to A4) e.g. oil sketch paper, stretched canvas, gesso-prepared board, unstretched canvas, or gesso-prepared paper/cardboard Brushes Selection of small to medium natural hog hair brushes – Rounds (size #2 to #10) Palette knife – teardrop or diamond shape Painting Medium Refined Linseed Oil or Low Toxic Paint medium Brush Cleaner Odourless solvent e.g. Langridge Solvent 75 – note: turpentine is not permitted Other Supplies A3 Paper palette 3 small clean jars (for medium and brush cleaning) Small sketchbook and graphite pencil Masking tape Cotton rag Protective apron or old shirt Disposable gloves Lucy Turnbull is a lecturer at Adelaide Central School of Art. She was awarded a Masters of Fine Art at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture (2018). Turnbull is interested in drawing and painting from observation to record her experience of place and connection to home.
