Charming antique Black Forest style carved painter's or artist's box filled with original aquarelle or watercolor tiles and porcelain mixing pots! A late 19th- to early 20th-century European watercolor paint box, probably German or Swiss-German made for the French export market, dating roughly circa 1890–1910. Both areas known for Black Forest carvings which is definitely what the exterior reflects. The inside is packed with 42 watercolor cakes or bricks, eight porcelain mixing pots or wells and the colorful label in the lid has text in three languages: English: “A Very Nice Colour Box”, German: “Feiner Maler Kasten” and French: “Boîte de Couleurs” around nine children engaged in art related activities. No actual maker marks that I can determine, the paint bricks themselves with a unique armorial style horse bust on one side and "Water Colours" on the other (some worn, of course, but most hardly used at all). Very good condition for age and type. The box is in great shape, both front clasps intact. The interior base has small dividers between all of the paint cakes but there are a few sections missing from the left side (see pictures). The mixing pots or wells at the sides are likely original and the ones in the center possible but likely later additions. A very nice set, indeed! Paint cakes are 1 1/8" x 5/8" and the wells are 1" and 1 1/8" in diameter. See images for all other measurements.
