Your Data Has a Story. Tell It. Using AI and Data Visualization to Make Information People Actually Remember - Workshop Thursday May 28, 2026 12:30 - 4pm $225 You probably have more data than you know what to do with. Program outcomes, survey results, financial figures, grant metrics. And you've probably been presenting them the same way for years: slides people stop reading, reports that pile up, numbers that don't seem to move anyone. This workshop is a chance to do something different. You'll spend the afternoon working with your own data, using AI tools to shape it into something clear and worth looking at. The goal is to leave with something real: a finished visualization, an infographic, or a data-driven piece you can actually put in front of a funder, a board, a community, or a newsletter reader. Small group, 12 to 16 people. Enough room to actually get help when you're stuck. No coding or design background needed. What You'll Work On Figuring out what your data is actually trying to say Choosing the right format for your message and who's going to see it Using a few tools (with and without AI) to build and refine your visual Writing the headline and context that make a visual land Getting your finished piece into whatever format you need What to Bring The workshop works best when you bring something real. Aim for at least one of: A spreadsheet or table of data from your own work A grant proposal or report with numbers you've been struggling to present A presentation or document you're currently working on A specific question you want to answer visually for a funder, board, or community Sample datasets will be on hand if you'd rather start fresh. All you need is a laptop with a browser Who This is For Nonprofit program staff and executive directors Grant writers and development officers Artists writing project proposals Bankers and financial professionals Real estate professionals Newsletter and communications writers Board members and community leaders Government and public sector staff Educators and researchers Anyone who regularly has to make numbers mean something to someone else About the Facilitator Eugene Chen (ideaowl.com) builds data visualizations and interactive tools. He has worked with the World Bank, Harvard's Opportunity Insights project, and Natural Resources Canada, and has run hands-on workshops for non-technical audiences at multiple Canadian Open Data Summits, Tech Yukon’s AI & Data Series programs, and OpenVisConf in Paris. His projects have been cited by the CBC, New York Times, NPR, and ABC News Coming to the evening session on May 27th is a good way to get oriented first, but this workshop stands on its own. Everyone is welcome.
