Invasive Plants: Removal, Stewardship & Wild Use Some plants arrive uninvited, spread aggressively, and put real pressure on native ecosystems, yet even these difficult species can teach us something about land, disturbance, and usefulness. In this class, we explore how to identify common invasive plants in our region, understand what makes them invasive, and approach them with both ecological responsibility and practical skill. Students will learn non-chemical removal strategies, land stewardship principles, and creative ways certain species can be used for food, flavor, and seasonal remedy. It is a thoughtful, hands-on look at how careful observation can turn frustration into understanding, and management into meaningful relationship with the land. * Learn how to identify several common invasive plants in our region, including Garlic Mustard, Japanese Knotweed, Autumn Olive, and Multiflora Rose, while understanding what makes a plant invasive versus merely naturalized. * Explore why invasive plants spread so aggressively, how disturbance opens the door for them, and what pressure they place on native plants, wildlife habitat, soil health, and the wider ecosystem. * Gain practical, non-chemical strategies for removal and control, including hand-pulling, digging, repeated cutting, smothering, competitive planting, and other stewardship-minded approaches. * Discover the surprising culinary and practical uses of select invasive plants through recipes, preparation ideas, and discussion of how abundance can sometimes be redirected into meaningful use. * Develop a more thoughtful view of land care by considering the complicated role these plants play in damaged landscapes, and how conservation, usefulness, and ecological responsibility can work together. 2 hours, $40. Clary Gardens offers recreational trails for all ages and varying levels of terrain, showcasing the rose garden all the way through our half-mile woodland loop - a fascinating area with natural geologic formations (a local favorite).
