This is a saree with 9 *kotharis* (boxes) each housing one auspicious motif associated with our culture...namely kumbha /kalash (pot) , Flower, Butterfly, Elephant, Peacock, Dear, Lion, Bird and Lotus, Shankh (Conch), House....Sometimes only 9 motifs are repeated (not in the same sequence), sometimes there are more motifs distributed in a calculated manner keeping in mind the aesthetics. 9 because, it is a powerful number associated with Navagraha, Naba Kalebara, 9 incarnations, Navaratri, Navami, 9 months of gestation period.... The motifs are arranged in a column and covers the entire body of the saree except for pallu. This is a typical Nuapatna weave and the motifs are made using tie & dye technique Odisha ikkat is known for.
