Hei Matau Necklace

Steeped in ancient legend and deep ocean reverence, the Hei Matau (fishhook) pendant represents strength, prosperity, and safe passage over water. Design Symbolism: The Hei Matau pattern is inspired by traditional hooks crafted from bone and stone, that symbolise strength, good fortune, and safe travel across the waves, eventually evolving into a treasured heirloom that signified leadership, provision, and a respectful harmony with the ocean's bounty. Prosperity and Abundance: Historically tied to catching food (kaimoana), the hook signifies a plentiful harvest, good health, and success. The design honours the ocean and the Māori relationship with Tangaroa, the god of the sea.It acts as a protective talisman for travellers and sailors crossing over water. Cultural Roots & Maui's Legacy: The design draws deep historical significance from the legendary demigod Māui, who used a fishhook (Matau-a-Māui) carved from his grandmother’s jawbone to pull up the North Island of Aotearoa (Te Ika-a-Māui) from the depths of the ocean.
