Kyo-yaki Chawan by Uno Toru - Handmade Japanese Matcha Bowl | USUGUMO
A refined Kyo-yaki chawan by Uno Tōru (宇野徹), a Kyoto ceramic artist known for his expressive approach to glaze, form and surface. The bowl is covered in a soft blue-grey glaze that shifts subtly between pale misty blue, grey and faint green depending on the light. Fine variations across the surface give the glaze depth without overwhelming the simplicity of the form, while the exposed reddish-brown foot creates a warm contrast against the cooler upper body. Its gently rounded walls rise into a broad open rim, creating a comfortable shape for whisking matcha. The pale interior also provides a beautiful backdrop for the vivid green of freshly prepared tea. Rather than relying on decoration, the character of the bowl comes from the relationship between glaze, clay and proportion. Small variations in tone, texture and surface are part of the handmade process and give the piece its individuality. Created by one of Kyoto's recognised post-war ceramic artists, this chawan brings together everyday function and a more considered studio-pottery sensibility.
