Blue Lacquer Kang Table with Carved Spandrels

Shanxi, circa 1920 This charming low table from Shanxi dates from the early twentieth century and has been refinished in a deep blue-teal lacquer. The colour varies subtly across the surface, with darker areas and glimpses of warm wood around the edges complementing the texture of the old timber. The lacquer’s sheen highlights the framed top and decorative carved spandrels beneath the table's extended top surface. Two small drawers sit above a broad, recessed front panel, each fitted with a simple metal drop handle. Panelled sides, short legs and shaped lower rails give the table a substantial yet balanced appearance, while the carved spandrels tapering down to the feet add an elegant flourish to the otherwise plain design. Originally used on the heated 'kang' platform of a Chinese home as an everyday work surface, the table's small size and low proportions make it a lovely coffee table for a compact living room, with useful storage for remote controls and other small items.
