German Antique Cast Iron Tabletop Easel by E.G. Zimmermann, 19th Century
A beautifully detailed 19th-century German cast iron tabletop easel by E.G. Zimmermann of Hanau, featuring elaborate Renaissance Revival decoration and an impressive sculptural design. Standing 59 cm tall, this antique display easel is crowned with a finely cast female portrait, flanked by two winged birds and surrounded by sweeping foliage and scrolling ornamentation. Delicate engraved floral patterns decorate the upright framework, while the lower section features an equally elaborate arrangement of scrollwork and floral motifs. The reverse bears the circular Carpe Diem foundry mark associated with E.G. Zimmermann, a German metalworking firm established in Hanau in 1842. The cast iron has developed a beautifully aged surface, with rich brown tones, areas of oxidation and remnants of its earlier finish that bring out the intricate detailing. Supported by a decorative folding rear leg, the easel is substantial and completely sturdy. Perfect for displaying an antique painting, framed engraving or other artwork on a mantelpiece, console table or within an art collection. Its elaborate design also makes it an attractive decorative piece in its own right.
