Mahonia repens (commonly known as Creeping Oregon Grape) Native Ground Cover, Edible Berries
Mahonia repens (commonly known as Creeping Oregon Grape, Creeping Mahonia, or Creeping Barberry) is a versatile, low-growing broadleaf evergreen shrub belonging to the barberry family. It is celebrated for its extreme hardiness, drought tolerance, and multi-season visual interest. Available as 2 year old plant in 3.5 inch container. Creeping Oregon Grape is native to western and central North America. Its natural habitat stretches from British Columbia and Alberta south to California, Arizona, and western Texas, extending east to the Rocky Mountains and the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is most frequently found in dry, open conifer forests, rocky hillsides, and woodland understories. It thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 5 through 9 (with some protected plants surviving down into Zone 4). Grows 1 to 2 feet tall (occasionally staying as low as 4–12 inches depending on altitude and exposure). Has a spread of 3 to 4 feet wide, though it can slowly expand via underground rhizomes (stolons) up to 6 to 8 feet wide over a decade to form a dense, low groundcover. Is exceptionally versatile; it tolerates full sun to deep shade. However, it performs best in partial shade, especially in areas with hot summers where afternoon sun can scorch the foliage. Has low to medium water needs. While it appreciates regular moisture while establishing, it is highly drought-tolerant once mature. Prefers rich, organic, well-drained soils. It adapts well to sandy, loamy, clay, or rocky textures, but highly dislikes waterlogged or poorly drained winter soils. It should be sheltered from harsh, drying winter winds to prevent leaf scorch. While Mahonia repens is a broadleaf evergreen, its matte, bluish-green summer leaves undergo a dramatic seasonal transition. Starting in late autumn and persisting through winter, the foliage transforms into a striking bronze, mauve, or deep plum-purple color, offering vibrant contrast when most other plants are dormant. It performs best in acidic to neutral soils (ideal pH range of 4.6 to 6.8). While it can tolerate slightly alkaline conditions, it is susceptible to chlorosis (yellowing of the leaves due to iron deficiency) if the soil pH becomes too high or alkaline. Use as a Ground Cover and for Erosion Control: Thanks to its creeping rhizome root system, it is frequently used to stabilize dry slopes, rock gardens, and embankments. It is an excellent, non-invasive alternative to English ivy for dry shade underneath mature trees (such as oaks or conifers) where it safely competes with tree roots. The fragrant spring flowers act as an early food source for bees and hummingbirds, while the late-summer blue-black berries are prized by songbirds and small mammals. The dark blue berries are edible for humans. While quite tart and sour raw, they are high in Vitamin C and excellent when cooked down with sugar into jams, jellies, and regional wines. The inner wood and roots contain berberine, which yields a vibrant yellow dye traditionally used by Native Americans for basket weaving and textiles. We can ship to all states.
