A completely hand-forged pair of traditional Japanese scissors, crafted from Blue Steel and finished with gold leaf applied over urushi lacquer. A Scissors Made for the Future of Craft This pair of scissors is entirely hand-forged using the traditional Japanese sō-hizukuri technique — a method in which the blade and spring are forged as one continuous piece of steel. The coloured details and lettering are finished by hand with Japanese urushi lacquer and gold leaf, giving each pair its own quiet beauty. The scissors you are holding were made by Terazaki, one of Japan’s very few remaining craftsmen capable of making scissors entirely by hand using this traditional technique. Since the retirement of his teacher, Mizuike, Terazaki has become the only craftsman who can create fully hand-forged scissors in a wide range of shapes and sizes, with different spring tensions and specifications, according to the needs of individual makers. His scissors are not simply cutting tools. They are tools made for craftsmen — tools that become an extension of the maker’s hand and support the work of those who create. More Than a Tool If all you are looking for is a pair of scissors that simply cuts well, this may not be the scissors you need. Terazaki himself would be the first to say that he still has much to learn. Compared with the masters who came before him, he is still on his journey. But this is precisely what makes a true craftsman: there is always another level to reach, another detail to refine, another possibility to explore. His teacher, Mizuike, continued to pursue that higher standard until the very end of his career. Today, craftsmen like Terazaki are becoming increasingly rare in Japan. The environment for sustaining such highly specialised skills is becoming more difficult, and the future of traditional craftsmanship is far from guaranteed. Choosing to own and use a pair of scissors like these is therefore about more than the object itself. It is a way of supporting the person who made it — and of helping create the conditions in which the next generation of craftsmen can emerge. Because Terazaki can work entirely by hand, he can create bespoke tools for professional makers at a realistic and appropriate price. His work supports not only individual craftsmen, but the wider ecosystem of Japanese making, craft and the culture that has grown around it. One of his scissors has already found its way into the hands of a craftsman at Hermès — an early example of how this kind of knowledge and skill can continue to travel into the future. To choose this pair is to become part of that future. Not simply a beautiful object to own, but a tool that carries a craft, a person and a way of making forward.
