Chrysogonum repens (Carolina Green and Gold)

Chrysogonum repens, commonly known as Carolina green-and-gold, is a low-growing, herbaceous perennial wildflower native to the southeastern United States. Belonging to the daisy family (Asteraceae), it is a highly popular native groundcover valued for its vibrant yellow flowers and ability to thrive in shaded environments. Historically, this plant was classified as Chrysogonum virginianum var. brevistolon. However, taxonomists elevated it to full species status as Chrysogonum repens based on its unique mat-forming growth habit. It spreads by surficial runners (stolons) to form dense, weed-suppressing mats. Its stolons feature short-to-intermediate internodes roughly 1 to 2 inches long. The plant produces bright green, hairy leaves with scalloped margins sitting on long stems. In warmer zones, the foliage remains semi-evergreen to evergreen. In early spring, it produces star-shaped flowers with 5 bright yellow ray petals. This species prefers partial shade to heavy shade and thrives in moist, well-drained acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Easily propagated by dividing its rhizomatic roots or diggin up rooted stolon runners. Valuable nectar source in the early spring for native bees, syrphid flies, and small butterflies.
