Based on the pre-war style E494A Anglia, it was designed as an affordable and practical car, costing under £400 including tax and becoming the lowest-priced car available at the time. Powered by Ford's Sidevalve 1172cc four-cylinder engine producing 30bhp, the Ford Popular had a top speed of around 60mph and achieved approximately 36mpg. Built with simplicity and affordability in mind, it featured a single vacuum-powered windscreen wiper, no heater, vinyl trim and minimal chrome detailing.
