Puligny-Montrachet is the most precise of the great white villages of the Côte de Beaune. The water table sits high beneath the vineyards, the soils are shallow and stony, and the wines that result are famously fine-boned, built around acidity and mineral drive rather than the fleshiness that comes so easily in neighbouring Meursault.Aromas of lemon blossom, green apple and crushed oyster shell are the starting point, filling out with white peach and a touch of toasted almond. The palate is linear and beautifully defined, with an insistent acid line, a chalky texture and a long, saline, quietly persistent finish.Pierre-Vincent Girardin, thirteenth generation of a Burgundian family and son of Vincent Girardin, learned the trade in his father's small vineyard before setting up on his own at Meursault in 2016. The signature of the house is the large format 456 litre François Frères barrel, which slows oxygen exchange and keeps new oak well in the background.Vintages may vary.
