Mateu FAIA Commentary Guy Peterson, FAIA and Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA Today we are often asked to believe that modern architecture is no longer a living, ever-transforming tradition of practice, but merely another “style” available for selection by the eclectic designer. Directly opposite stands the work of Mateu Architecture – in his 45 years of practicing architecture in Miami, Roney Mateu has designed and built modern architecture, for modern clients, in a modern city. Economical and yet expressive, functional and yet experientially rich, constructed of modest materials and yet full of generous light, Mateu’s buildings are examples of a vibrant, humane, and uncompromised modern architecture – simply modern. Robert McCarter, from the foreword to Simply Modern Simply Modern: The Work of Mateu Architecture offers an exciting overview of the work, career and philosophy of Miami-based architect Roney Mateu. Featuring highlights from almost half a century of architectural practice in Florida and elsewhere, the projects are accompanied by expert photography, descriptions and graphic documentation as well as illuminating essays by Mateu and chosen critics and colleagues.
