The European Review of Books is a magazine of culture and ideas, published in print and online from the Netherlands. It brings together essays, fiction, criticism, travel writing, poetry and other forms of literary and intellectual writing, with contributions appearing in English as well as in a writer’s own language. Issue 12 moves across literature, politics, history, technology and contemporary European life. Inside: a visit to an Irish subsea cable landing station, reflections on writing and translation, disappearing winters, the libidinal pull of fascism, sex workers as markers of national character and the invisible work of interpreters at the Yugoslavia Tribunal. The issue also looks at Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski, war photographer Lee Miller, the ethics of paying attention and the philosophy of book design, alongside a newly translated story by Ingeborg Bachmann and a group of essays asking what remains of international law. About The European Review of Books Founded in 2021, The European Review of Books publishes book-length print issues three times a year alongside new writing online. Its editorial world extends well beyond conventional book reviewing, using the essay as a starting point for literature, politics, history, philosophy and cultural criticism. The print edition is also distinctive as an object: its uncut pages can be opened to reveal a second layer of shorter texts, asides and visual material.
