There is something irresistibly vivid about a great Kenyan coffee. Bright, juicy and full of life, it bursts across the palate with the confidence of a coffee that knows exactly how good it is. Nyanja is grown high on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya, where cool conditions help the cherries ripen slowly. The result is a clean, expressive coffee with remarkable clarity, made from celebrated Kenyan varieties including SL28, SL34, Batian and Ruiru 11. The People Behind This Bean Around 1,330 smallholder farmers deliver their freshly picked cherries to Nyanja washing station in Kirinyaga. It is one of 12 stations operated by Baragwi Farmers’ Co-operative Society, which has brought local growers together since 1953. Each farmer tends their own small plot, while the cooperative shares processing facilities, training and knowledge. Managers rotate between stations every two years, helping good ideas travel and quality remain consistent. The Processing The cherries face a rather exacting entrance examination. They are carefully sorted, pulped and fermented overnight, then washed and separated into grades. The coffee is spread across raised tables and dried slowly for 8 to 14 days, allowing moisture to leave evenly. This fully washed process brings precision and clarity to the cup, revealing the character created by the variety, altitude and careful farming. The Environment Nyanja sits between 1,600 and 1,800 ma surrounded by clay loam soils and generous annual rainfall. Across the wider cooperative, growers work to protect wetlands and tree-lined waterways, plant native shade trees and reduce harmful agricultural chemicals. Baragwi has also invested in metal drying beds, solar dryers and more efficient processing equipment. Healthy land is not a charming extra here. It is where better coffee begins, and what helps ensure it can continue for generations. Rather beautifully, too. Who is this Melbourne coffee roaster?
