A Kuro Tamba Chawan by Kimihiko Imanishi, a ceramic artist based in Tamba. The substantial cylindrical form is covered in a deep black-brown fired surface. Its richly blistered texture is reminiscent of abura-age, Japanese fried tofu, with a wonderfully “juicy,” fire-seared quality created by the flames and ash of the wood-fired kiln. Around the foot, black, reddish brown, green, and gray tones emerge in complex layers, concentrating the dramatic transformations of the firing. In contrast, the interior is covered with a warm amber-toned glaze, creating a rich landscape that glows against the surrounding darkness. The bowl also sits comfortably in the hands, with a satisfying weight that reinforces its strong sense of volume.
