The painting was created by Winslow Homer (1836-1910) - an American painter, printmaker, and illustrator. One of the most outstanding artists active in the second half of the 19th century in the United States. Member of the National Academy of Design since 1865. The attached artwork depicts "Water Dipper," painted in 1898/99. The artwork shows a young Black man intensely searching for coral using a bucket with a glass bottom. This device, known as "water glass" or "sponge glass," was used to stabilize the surface of moving water to improve visibility. Homer may have been drawn to this subject because it draws attention to the constantly moving surface of the water, as well as its transparency—aspects of the sea that particularly fascinated him in the Bahamas.
