Antique Victorian English 1870s 22K pavé set turquoise ring
An English Victorian turquoise ring in 22K gold. The ring bears the date letter for 1871, which was about halfway through Queen Victoria's reign. The turquoise cabochons are pavé set within an eye-shaped head. The gallery has scalloped openwork detail. The shank features a reverse taper, narrowing as it approaches the head. Stamped with full British hallmarks including the bust of Victoria, which indicates that duty was paid on the gold in the ring. Duty was collected by the British government for about 100 years from 1784-1890, primarily as a way to recoup financial losses from the Revolutionary War. Condition is very good for 150+ years! One of the turquoise appears to be a simulated (glass) replacement, but all others look original to the ring and have a lovely color range. Measurements: Size 7 3/4 US, 2.4 grams Era: 1870s (1871) Markings: Full British hallmarks for fineness, assay, and date
