WILLIAM PEREHUDOFF "AC-85-42" PAINTING, 1985
William Perehudoff (1918-2013) is one of the most cherished and collected Canadian abstract painters. His work is a prime example of how color field painting was expressed in Canada. Like Jack Bush, and some of his American contemporaries, he was encouraged and guided by legendary New York critic Clement Greenberg. Perehudoff is known for his simple and exuberant canvases that celebrate the interaction and power of color. He spent several summers at the University of Saskatchewan's legendary Emma Lake Artist's Workshop where he worked and studied with Jules Olitski and Kenneth Noland during the 1960's. During his lifetime Perehudoff had recognition across Canada (and beyond). Today his works can be found in major public collections across the country. Even during his heyday, Perehudoff stayed in Saskatchewan preferring to paint at his family's farm. This is a classic and easily recognizable example of Perehudoff's work from the 1980's. The background is "stained" and appears that diluted acrylic has been absorbed into the canvas, rather than being applied by brush or another tool. This subtle but dynamic element is surrounded by thick glossy strokes of pure, vibrat color. Questions about this piece? Contact us, call +1.416.704.1720, or visit our Toronto Gallery.
