A Length of Beautifully Woven Plaid Cotton Cloth: Hand Spun Yarns

late nineteenth century 68" x 13", 173 cm x 33 cm This is a length of beautifully hand woven plaid cloth that has been made with richly textured hand spun cotton yarns. The plaid design, seemingly straightforward, is more complex in tone and concept than one might assume at first glance. As can be seen on the last detail photo there is a narrow line of pale blue on the warp of this length and this detail adds depth and interest that is probably not noticed. The dulled pale colored sections of the cloth sit subtly against the darker tones, creating a rather low contrast design. The hand of the cloth is of the kind of wonderful texture yielded by hand spun cotton. It drapes well which makes this as wearable as it is displayable. A quiet beauty.
