HO PRR X29F & X29G Boxcar Decals Shadow Keystone Sheme
As the large fleet of Pennsylvania Railroad X29’s was aging from the hard use and abuse it endured during WW2, the need to rebuild these for continued use because quickly apparent. Also, no developments in freight car loading were implemented to ensure customer satisfaction and that loads were not getting damaged in transit. Starting in May 1959 the Samuel Rea Shops started rebuilding 900 cars classed as X29G for general service and at the same time parts were being procured to rebuild 400 boxcars into class X29F, which were equipped with Sparton Tri-belt loaders. Externally, the X29F and X29G were identical. The X29F which were equipped with loaders did receive a door-mounted plate with the “STB” logo applied to it in yellow. Since these cars were being rebuilt in the late 1950’s, they emerged from Sam Rea decorated in the Shadow Keystone Scheme. The X29F roster numbered from 606250 to 606649 for a total of 400 cars, “rebuilt in 7-1959. The X29G roster numbered from 606350 to 606249 for a total of 900 cars, “rebuilt” from 5-7 1959. These rebuilt cars last in this Shadow Keystone Scheme well into Penn Central with some even into early Conrail before finally being retired. This sheet includes enough data for 1 car. Scale Codes for Sam Rea Shops at Hollidaysburg (P62), Conway (P341), Logansport, IN (P476), Jeffersonville, IN(P732) have been included. The car numbers pre-fix of 605 and 606 have been provided, with enough numbers for you to pick your own. The X29F and X29G have been produced as 3D printed kits by Bridge Line Designs and are available for sale from 3D Central Trains. For painting instructions, in the Shadow Keystone scheme (pre-1954) the entire car is to be painted in Freight Car Color, the underbody and trucks are to be painted black. There is a very definitive article covering the 1959 Box Car Rebuilds by Rich Burg in Volume 12, number 2 of the Keystone, published by the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical & Historical Society. Additional photos can be found in Volumes 1-3 of the PRR Color Guide.
