In their temperate marine world, the male Southern Blue Devil (Paraplesiops meleagris) is a serious boi about his parental duties. When I illustrated this species, I wanted to convey more than just their electric blue spots and powerful fin architecture. Once a female lays her eggs inside a dark cave, crevice, or overhang along Australia’s southern coast, she leaves, and the male takes over full-time. He sets up camp in the dark, aggressively patrolling the entrance, fanning fresh oxygen over the clutch, and fiercely backing down any fish that gets too close until the eggs hatch. So, those spots allow researchers to recognise individual bois during a lifespan of up to 60 years, and those fins sweep water tenderly over their egg clutch while guarding it in their cave crevice. He’s not just showing off those bright blue markings for fierce lewks ; he’s defending his family. Hence: Fierce Boi.
