HAL Chawan, the latest work by Yotaro Isezaki, an artist who pursues a highly individual mode of expression through the use of transfer techniques and AI. Characters and graphics reminiscent of 1990s anime are layered across the entire surface of the bowl through transfer, creating a striking visual world that feels almost like a single collage. Though primarily monochrome, vivid color appears around the rim, and different images emerge one after another depending on the viewing angle. Despite its highly provocative appearance, the form of the bowl itself is exceptionally well resolved as a chawan. Having trained in Bizen, the artist brings a solid understanding to the swelling of the body, the foot, and the handling of the piece, layering these bold methods upon a foundation of assured technical skill.
