Giant Fruit Roll, 400g

The Giant Fruit Roll is the whole sheet of dried stonefruit rolled up in one piece, about 35 cm long and at least 400 g. The maker says each roll holds the equivalent of 4 kg of fresh fruit. Nine flavours are listed: nectarine, plum, peach, apricot, candy beaut sour plum, sour apricot, prune plum, pear and plum, and satsuma plum. Nothing is cut or coated here. The maker suggests baking it into fruit slices and fruit biscuits, or using it in savoury dishes such as plum pork. The FAQ adds two handling notes: a sticky roll is easier to cut with scissors after a spell in the fridge, though it needs no fridge, and the sugars in a batch can crystallise and feel gritty, which the maker says cooking removes. The roll is the largest of the Solarfruit lines we list. Fruit Platter Pieces are the same dried sheet cut into small squares, and Coconut Coated Fruit and Dark Choc Coated Fruit are bite-sized pieces with a coating. As across the range, the label names potassium metabisulphite (E224). Made by Solarfruit, a family business in Donnybrook. Sue and Steve Collis say they started it in 1994 to make sun-dried fruit bars. Seeing it in person Solarfruit has a factory shop on Wade Road, Donnybrook.
