Paul Gauguin | Large Yellow Symbolist Canvas Print | Grasshoppers and Ants

Volpini Suite: The Grasshoppers and the Ants — Paul GauguinAn oversized Symbolist canvas print in yellow and black. Its broad field of chrome yellow works like a lit window, warming a dining room, café wall or hotel reception, while the ink-drawn women balancing baskets of fruit keep the eye moving along the wall.Visual PresenceFrom across the room the canvas reads as one saturated plane of chrome yellow, throwing warm light back into the space the way a south-facing window does. Come closer and the black ink figures sharpen — six women with baskets on their heads — giving the wall a second, slower read over a long dinner. The dark band of sea across the top anchors all that yellow, so the piece energises a large wall without ever floating off it.About the ArtPaul Gauguin (1848–1903), Post-Impressionism, painted 1889. Paul Gauguin printed this sheet for his first-ever suite of prints, the zincographs he hung at Volpini's Café des Arts on the grounds of the Paris World's Fair. Pulled in black ink on loud chrome-yellow paper — a colour Gauguin tied to modernity after his season with Van Gogh — it remembers his months on Martinique: women by the sea, resting and walking with baskets of fruit on their heads, under a title borrowed from La Fontaine's fable of the grasshoppers and the ants. We chose it because it carries a wall on colour and drawn line alone, and because that yellow was Gauguin's deliberate provocation, still startling today.Size & FinishPrinted to order in 8 sizes from 110×80 cm up to 280×200 cm, as a rolled giclée print, stretched canvas, or in a black, white or natural oak gallery-style floating frame. 320g professional and 380g linen canvas.
