Discover the expressive possibilities of watercolor while getting hands-on experience with Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolors—and leave with your own reusable palette of Daniel Smith colors so you can keep painting after the workshop is over. In this Medium Mastery workshop, each participant will receive a reusable plastic watercolor palette filled with a curated selection of Daniel Smith watercolors. You’ll use your palette throughout the class as we explore how different pigments behave, mix, layer, and interact with water. At the end of the workshop, the palette and remaining Daniel Smith watercolor are yours to take home, reactivate, and continue using. We’ll begin by experimenting. You’ll explore fundamental watercolor techniques including wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry painting, washes, layering, color mixing, edge control, and varying the amount of water in your brush and paint. We’ll also look more closely at some of the characteristics that make individual watercolor pigments interesting, including transparency, staining, granulation, and unexpected color interactions. Then we’ll put those discoveries to work by creating a collection of small, original watercolor greeting cards. Florals, landscapes, foliage, abstract designs—the small format makes it easy to experiment without the pressure of producing a large finished painting. Your watercolor studies become beautiful, one-of-a-kind cards to send, give, or keep. The emphasis is on exploration rather than perfection. You’ll leave with a better understanding of how watercolor behaves, several handmade cards, and your own Daniel Smith palette ready for your next painting session.
