Church of the Spirit
About the edition This A3 Risograph print has been created to coincide with France-Lise McGurn’s exhibition, The Charm Offensive, in DCA Galleries. The exhibition marks the artist’s most significant presentation in a UK institution to date, featuring paintings which spill from the canvas over the walls and floor alongside images and objects from McGurn’s studio. The image used for this print started as a sketch for a neon sign and reflects the figures found on canvases, furniture, walls and diary pages throughout the exhibition. McGurn describes these figures as “part self-portrait, part observation, part memory”. It’s also a nod to a student bohemian ideology, with the title coming from McGurn’s time in Dundee where she lived above the Church of the Spirit while studying at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. This print was created in DCA Print Studio using the fast-paced process of Risograph printing, a technique that works like a combination of screen printing and photocopying. Lines of Fluorescent Pink, Yellow, Aqua and Blue ink combine to form a figure surrounded by sketches of a heart and a lightbulb – motifs that can also be found throughout The Charm Offensive. Unsigned and unnumbered, this print was designed exclusively for DCA Shop, offering an affordable way to take home a piece by an acclaimed contemporary Scottish artist.
