Lama Cherry Plum

*New Release* Lama Cherry Plum stands out as one of the most unique fruit varieties we grow here at the Nursery. The tree is highly ornamental, beginning the season with delicate pink blossoms in spring, followed by distinctive dark maroon-purple foliage. Deep red fruits develop shortly after, with red, freestone flesh and an aromatic, sweet, juicy flavour. The fruit is delicious enjoyed fresh or can be used for preserves. The fruits grow up to 5 cm (2") in diameter and ripen from mid to late August. Lama Cherry Plum is also notably precocious, often beginning to fruit a season or two earlier than most plum varieties. Lama Cherry Plum was bred by renowned Belarusian breeder Valery Avksentievich Matveyev. It is a cross involving Ussuri plum and cherry plum genetics, combining ornamental qualities with delicious, early-bearing fruit. Growers Note: It is highly recommended that you purchase a Canada Plum or an American Plum to pollinate our Hybrid plums, as they are self-sterile. Plum trees like fertile, well-drained soil. They should be planted at least 3-4m (12-15 feet) apart, and fruit can be expected around 4 to 6 years of age.
