Massive Sculptural Birch Root Bowl, Finland, 1940s

An exceptionally large Finnish root bowl, hand-carved from a single massive piece of birch root or burl wood. Measuring 29.5 inches (75 cm) in diameter, the bowl retains the irregular natural growth of the timber, with an organic rim, knots, openings and naturally formed cavities incorporated into its shape. The warm golden surface reveals particularly expressive grain and figuring throughout. Root and burl wood have a long tradition in Nordic craft, where naturally occurring forms were used to create functional objects while preserving the individual character of the material. Rather than imposing a regular shape on the wood, the maker of this bowl has worked with its existing structure. The smoothly carved interior contrasts beautifully with the rawer outer surface and natural voids. At this scale, the bowl has considerable sculptural presence. It works as a large centerpiece on a table or low pedestal, or simply as a standalone decorative object.
