Crooked Beak Headdress

This large Crooked Beak Headdress was hand-carved in red cedar by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Raymond Shaw. It has been painted with acrylic, and adorned with cedar bark. It also features an articulated beak. The Crooked-Beak is a supernatural bird recognized by the dramatic curving spiral off the end of its beak. In a potlatch, a group of supernatural birds, including the Crooked Beak, the Huk Huk, and a Raven, tame the possessed Hamat´sa-Dancer. This headdress, excluding the cedar bark, measures approximately 32 inches or 81 centimetres long, 21 inches or 53.5 centimetres tall, and 9.5 or 24 centimetres wide. Including the cedar bark, the headdress measures approximately 35 inches or 89 centimetres long, 44 inches or 112 centimetres tall, and 12 inches or 30.5 centimetres wide.
