Staghorn hunter powder flask
A finely carved antler powder flask mounted with gilt-brass fittings and decorated with exceptionally detailed hunting scenes. The principal side depicts a dramatic red deer hunt set within a wooded landscape, with two mounted huntsmen accompanied by a pack of hounds pursuing and attacking a stag. The reverse is carved with a quieter woodland scene showing a group of deer amongst trees, providing an attractive contrast to the dynamic hunting scene on the front. The natural form and surface of the antler are skilfully incorporated into the composition, while the gilt-brass mounts provide a refined decorative contrast. The flask is fitted with two suspension rings, one to either side, allowing it to be carried from a strap or hunting accoutrement. A finely executed example of German hunting equipment, reflecting the strong 19th-century tradition of elaborately carved hunting accessories and the enduring importance of deer hunting imagery in German sporting culture. Germany, second half of the 19th century.
