Mentored by Arthur Berry and championed by Reginald Haggar of the Staffordshire Society of Artists, Simcock developed a distinctive style rooted in the Potteries landscape. He documented his life and inspirations in his autobiography Simcock Mowcop. He died in 2012, the evening before he was due to exhibit at The Chancellors Gallery, Keele University, alongside Arthur Berry and Enos Lovatt.This painting was created in Simcock's studio on Primitive Street, Mow Cop, on the North Staffordshire/Cheshire border — the very landscape that defined his artistic vision.
