Old Original Israel Melon

Old Original Israel Melon is a variety that lives up to its name—and its reputation. Often described as one of the finest-tasting melons ever developed, this heirloom delivered what may well be the best melon we’ve ever eaten. The flavor was unforgettable: intensely sweet, exceptionally smooth, with surprising notes of banana and even a hint of ice cream. It’s the kind of melon you keep talking about long after the season ends. This variety is distinct from the more commonly known HaOgen Israel melon. While HaOgen is smaller and deeply sutured, Old Original Israel produces large fruit in the 7–8 pound range with a thin, loosely netted rind that is not sutured. As it ripens, the rind takes on a subtle golden cast—a reliable visual cue that peak flavor is near. Inside, the flesh is creamy white, smooth, and melting. There is one critical key to unlocking this melon’s full potential: do not irrigate as the fruit matures. Like many high-sugar melons, excess water at this stage will dilute the flavor. When grown properly, however, the results are extraordinary. Matures approximately 90-95 days after sowing. Each packet contains a minimum of 25 seeds.
