Little marks or discoloration are badges of honor, not flaws! An intaglio is an intricate and highly skilled ancient engraving technique where an image is engraved into the material, here, glass. Unlike a cameo, where the design rises above the surface, the image in an intaglio is cut into the material. Often the carving is made underneath the piece, so it shows from the front and is below the surface. Glass is made from natural materials like sand, soda ash, and limestone that are melted and cooled quickly to prevent crystals from forming. Archaeological evidence suggests glassmaking dates back to at least 3600 BC in Mesopotamia, Egypt, or Syria. *Please note: the color of the stone may be slightly different in person due to photography/computer monitor/device screen color and lighting discrepancies.
