15ct Amethyst Festoon Necklace | Bloomed Gold Reeded Chain | English Victorian c.1870s
A rare and beautiful English bloomed gold festoon necklace of the 1870s — one of the most unusual examples we have encountered, and one we have genuinely never seen replicated. The rarity here is layered. First: the scale. Festoon and swag necklaces at 19 inches are extraordinarily difficult to find; the vast majority of surviving examples are far shorter. Second: the chain itself. Every millimetre of the curb link surface is covered in a very subtle texturing — reeded, as we call it — that follows the French fashion of the period but rendered here in English bloomed gold, a combination we have simply never seen before. The amethyst stones are sizable, ranging from 10mm to 14.5mm in length, and the festoon chain that decorates between them gives the necklace its wonderful draping movement. At 27.37 grams it wears with presence.
