Original vintage Plein Air Impressionist landscape and portrait painting of a violinist playing in a sunlit landscape, by American Impressionist, Karl Albert Buehr (1866-1952). Karl Albert Buehr was a prominent German- American Impressionist painter and influential educator, best known for his luminous depictions of women in outdoor garden settings. Karl Buehr was born in Feuerbach, Germany, to prosperous vineyard owners. He immigrated to Chicago with his family, around 1881. While working for a lithography company, Albert Buehr began attending night classes at the School of Art Institute of Chicago, (SAIC). He famously worked as a night watchman at the Art Institute, using the time to study master paintings, and post his own sketches among student work, to see how they compared. He studied under John H. Vanderpoel, and graduated with honors, in 1894, immediately receiving an offer to join the faculty. Karl Buehr's most significant development occurred in Europe. He relocated his family to Giverny, France, in 1909, living in the same village as Claude Monet. There, he transitioned from a "subdued, tonal approach", to the decorative Impressionism that became his signature style- vibrant, sun- drenched canvases, featuring women in pastoral landscapes. He was a member of the "second generation" of Giverny artists, alongside Frederick Frieseke and Richard E. Miller. Though primarily based in Chicago, Buehr spent a significant amount of time in California. In the late 1920s, he held prestigious teaching positions at both Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley. In 1915, Buehr won a silver medal at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, which cemented his national reputation. While in the West, he painted landscapes based on his travels in Taos, New Mexico, and California. In 1922, Karl Buehr was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design, one of the highest honors, for American artists. Karl Buehr remained a beloved teacher at SAIC for a quarter- century, with his work regularly described as "sunshine on a summer day". Karl Buehr passed away in Chicago in 1952, at age 86. Karl Albert Buehr's works are represented in several prominent public and private institution collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Chicago, John H. Vanderpoel Art Association, Vassar College, Des Moines Historical Museum, Columbus Museum of Art, the Union League of Chicago, and the M. Christine Schwartz Collection.
