Bornholm Fig

The Ficus carica 'Bornholm' is a hardy fig variety originating from the Danish island of Bornholm. It is renowned for its exceptional frost tolerance, making it one of the most cold-hardy fig cultivars available. While young plants benefit from winter protection during their first few years, mature specimens can withstand temperatures down to -20°C, making it suitable for gardens in cooler climates. This fig thrives in a sunny, sheltered position, such as against a wall, where it can achieve its full potential. The plant develops a bushy, upright habit and can reach up to 3–4 meters in height and spread. 'Bornholm' is self-fertile, so it does not require a pollination partner, making it ideal for smaller gardens. The fruit is medium to large, with smooth, dark purple skin and a sweet, aromatic flavour. It ripens from late summer into early autumn, providing a rewarding harvest for gardeners who want fresh figs in cooler regions. Occasional pruning helps maintain shape and encourages healthy growth, while well-drained, fertile soil supports robust fruiting.
