The Lion Medusa Penny

The Medusa Lion Penny pairs two ancient guardian figures: Medusa and the lion. For centuries, these images appeared upon gates, fountains, shields, temples, libraries, and sacred thresholds as symbols of protection against envy, misfortune, and harmful forces. On one side, Medusa. Over time, she became flattened into the image of a monster, yet beneath the myth lies something far more complex: a woman transformed by the projections, fears, and desires of others. To me, Medusa represents the moment beauty ceases to exist for casual consumption. Her gaze became protective. Untouchable. Sacred. On the reverse, the lion. For centuries, lions stood watch over palaces, tombs, cities, and places of knowledge. The lion protects through visible strength, dignity, courage, and sovereign presence. Together, these figures form to emblems of guardianship. One protects through fierce boundary. The other through radiant strength. I designed this penny as a ward for correspondence itself, particularly for protecting the noble and sacred architecture enclosed within the letter long enough for it to blossom. A small emblem for those seeking to protect their creativity, innermost truths, and unconditional love from the forces that would diminish or harden them.
