Mechanical Hand
A ‘Carnes’ mechanical prosthetic hand. USA c.1910. The hand features a range of innovative materials and mechanism , the light alloy hand has steel fingers for strength with wooden fingertips, the latter for warmth of touch when shaking hands. The mechanism is cord operated via a worm and sector gear in the hand which allows for gripping objects of all sizes, in operation it sounds remarkably like a gun cocking. There is a lever for adjusting angles. This hand comes complete with a leather forearm and its original delivery box, it appears to have never been used. In excellent mechanical condition with a new leather operating cord fitted, the paint is chipped on the hand which has the benefit of showing the different materials used. *The Carnes hand was used as a model for the automatons hands in the film ‘HUGO’.
