Antique Swedish Chair antique circa 1890 professionally redone - reupholstered in new muslin fabric and repainted original frame Gustavian style Approximately: 33" high x 18" wide x 16" deep sold individually The Gustavian style emerged in Sweden during the reign of King Gustav III after he visited France and brought back the fashionable Louis XVI neoclassical aesthetic. Swedish craftsmen adapted the grand French designs into something lighter, quieter, and more practical for Scandinavian interiors. As a result, Gustavian furniture often feels more delicate and restrained than true French court pieces, with muted painted finishes, cleaner lines, softer ornamentation, and a subtle rustic warmth. The carved rosettes, fluted tapering legs, and squared backs are still directly rooted in Louis XVI design, while the simplified execution and pale finish speak distinctly to the Swedish interpretation of the style. These chairs also appear as though they may have originally belonged to a larger salon or dining suite and were later professionally upholstered in the soft neutral textile they wear today.
