The Pzgr. 39 APCBC was the standard round — its soft cap gripped angled armour while the ballistic cap preserved velocity at range, detonating via a delayed base fuze. When tungsten supply allowed, crews carried the Pzgr. 40 APCR for close-range shots against the heaviest enemy tanks, trading range for raw penetration. The Gr. 38 HEAT offered a chemical-energy alternative that penetrated just as well at 100m as at 2,000m, making it a reliable backup. For soft targets — gun crews, bunkers, trucks — the Spr.Gr. 34 HE’s 450g Amatol filler did the job. Spent casings were tossed onto the turret floor or thrown clear to keep the crew compartment free of toxic propellant fumes during sustained engagements.
