Betula utilis var. jacquemontii, commonly known as Himalayan Birch, is a striking ornamental and specimen tree grown primarily for its brilliant white bark. It is an excellent choice for lawns, borders, avenues and feature planting, particularly where a tree with strong winter interest is required. The deciduous tree develops an elegant, upright crown with bold white bark covering the trunk and larger branches, creating a dramatic focal point throughout the year. The white bark is especially striking during winter when the tree has lost its foliage. In early spring, yellow-brown male catkins up to 12cm long appear, followed by fresh green foliage. The leaves provide a light, airy canopy through spring and summer before developing yellow tones in autumn. Himalayan Birch can reach approximately 10–15 metres in height, making it best suited to medium and larger gardens, lawns and open planting areas. It can also be planted in groups or avenues to create a particularly impressive effect. Its brilliant white bark makes it especially effective as a feature or specimen tree, providing strong contrast against darker evergreen planting and creating year-round architectural interest. Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil for the best results.
