Mac/Eddy Today #82: 1949: Transitional Year; Claude Jarman Jr., Jane Powell

Just released! Journal #82 is very important, as it presents a detailed account of 1949, a difficult year when Jeanette and Nelson’s relationship began to show serious cracks. Most of the information is quoted and sourced from contemporary letters, and some never before made public. Also covered are failed efforts to bring them together for an MGM reunion film, despite the fact that both had signed a one-picture contract. Among the new information: the mink stole Jeanette wore in her final film, The Sun Comes Up (released in early 1949) was purchased by Nelson for her, from the studio as a Christmas gift, for $8,000. The journal also details a serious quarrel between them, one so upsetting that Jeanette flew to New Orleans in an attempt to reconcile with Nelson, who was on tour and scheduled to sing there. The effort failed, and Nelson was said to be “emotionally struggling” at his next recitals, even apologizing to his audiences for singing badly. His wife, Ann Eddy, also made threats that helped end any possibility of any reunion film. Included also are interview notes and comments about working with Jeanette in her last two movies, by Claude Jarman Jr. and Jane Powell; she went on to star in that 1949 planned reunion film, but without Jeanette and Nelson.
