Quilts with this unusual long, narrow configuration are referred to as hired man's quilts as they were likely made for a worker's cot. This example measures 38" x 75". It was made by Amish Susan J. Miller of Berlin, Ohio (Holmes County).; circa 1920. The front of the quilt has two black bands of borders that match with the black binding. The center frame is quilted throughout with groups of four tulips. The outer border is quilted with a traditional feather pattern. Condition is excellent. The backing is a blue chambray cotton. When hung the long way, the quilt would be perfect in a stairwell. Vertically, it can work well over a sofa or a mantelpiece.
