Bell 201A Modem 🥇First Commercially-Released High-Speed Landline Modem The Bell 201A Data-Phone, introduced by AT&T in 1962, was a pioneering commercial modem that helped usher in the era of high-speed business data transmission over standard telephone lines. Housed in a heavy, metal desk cabinet, the 201A operated at a then-astonishing speed of 2,000 bits per second (2 kbps) in half-duplex mode, making it nearly seven times faster than the entry-level Bell 103 modem of the same year. To achieve this jump in performance, AT&T engineers utilized an innovative technique called Phase-Shift Keying (PSK), which encoded digital bits by shifting the timing of analog sound waves rather than just changing their pitch. Designed primarily for corporate mainframes, banks, and government agencies, the unit allowed organizations to quickly send large volumes of computer data—such as punched-card records or magnetic tape files—across the existing voice network. Users would dial a number using a connected telephone handset, listen for the answering tone, and then press a button on the front panel to hand control over to the modem, establishing a crucial bridge between early electronic computing and nationwide telecommunications. Curator's Note: While a handful of Bell 201A chassis survive in institutional archives, almost all were stripped of their precious metals or gutted by hobbyists after AT&T retired the leased units. This specimen, Serial #2912, is extraordinarily exceptional as it remains 100% complete and fully populated with all 28 of its original, aluminum-shielded discrete logic modules intact.
