Elis Åslund - Reflections in a Woodland Pool
Elis Åslund (1872–1956) Sweden Reflections in a Woodland Pool signed lower right Elis Åslund oil on panel unframed 23.5 × 39 cm (9.3 × 15.4 in) framed 34 × 49 cm (13.4 × 19.3 in) Provenance: Private collection, Sweden. Essay: This landscape demonstrates Elis Åslund's remarkable ability to transform an ordinary corner of the Swedish countryside into a study of light, colour and reflection. Rather than depicting a sweeping panorama, the artist focuses on a shallow woodland pool, where the surrounding birch trees and vegetation dissolve into shimmering reflections across the still water. The result is a composition of great immediacy, inviting the viewer to observe the subtle interplay between solid forms and their mirrored counterparts. The painting is built through confident brushwork. Broad horizontal strokes describe the floating vegetation, while fluid vertical touches suggest the reflections of slender birch trunks. The water itself becomes the principal subject, constantly shifting between transparency and reflection. Browns, olive greens, pale ochres and creamy whites are layered with remarkable freedom, producing a surface that feels spontaneous yet carefully balanced. Elis Åslund belonged to the generation of Swedish landscape painters who sought inspiration directly from nature. Educated at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, he continued his artistic studies through extensive travels in Europe before establishing himself as a respected painter of landscapes, forests and rural scenery. Throughout his career he remained devoted to direct observation, favouring quiet, intimate motifs over grand compositions. His paintings are characterised by restrained colour harmonies, confident draftsmanship and a sensitive response to changing light. Condition: The painting is preserved in very good condition with a well retained paint surface and a fresh, vibrant palette. A repaired crack in the panel.
